Of all the people who have ever ran for president and lost, who do you think deserved to win and why?

I know I’ve answered similar questions to this before, so you’ll have to search the archives for the “why”, but I’ll share a few of the who’s.

Now, I’m not sure that “deserved to win” is the best way to put it because no one necessarily “deserves” a victory in a Presidential campaign.  Each candidate and their supporters have various reasons why they should have won, but everyone has to earn it rather than just deserving it.  Anyway, semantics aside, here are a few major party candidates who I think would have made a much more positive impact had they won their shot at the Presidency:

•Charles Evans Hughes: Defeated by President Wilson in 1916.
•Samuel J. Tilden: Lost perhaps the strangest Presidential election in history to Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, courtesy of an Electoral Commission.
•Al Gore: Defeated in 2000 by George W. Bush, William H. Rehnquist, Sandra Day O’Connor, Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Anthony Kennedy.
•Gerald Ford: Defeated by Jimmy Carter in 1976
•Henry Clay: Defeated by Andrew Jackson in 1832 (Also lost in 1824 and 1844)

Like I said, I know I’ve gone into more detail about it in the past, so you might want to do a site specific search through Google since Tumblr’s search option probably wouldn’t be able to find the word “President” if you looked for it.
