If John Kerry assumes his (ahem long overdue ahem) role as the head of the state department, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick will have a senate seat to fill until a special election can be called. Can Patrick appoint himself to the seat? What sort of chaos would the bay state be thrown into if this occurred?

I’m really not up-to-snuff on Massachusetts politics, but Governor Patrick can definitely appoint himself to fill John Kerry’s Senate seat.  I’d be very surprised if he did, but Governors have appointed themselves to vacant Senate seats in the past.
