I think it would be a perfect job for Governor Huntsman — not just because of the obvious fact that it raises his profile nationally and internationally, but because his experience overseas, particularly in China, makes him a natural fit for the State Department.
However, I’d be very surprised to see President Obama appoint a Republican — especially a Republican who should be at the top of the GOP’s list for potential 2016 Presidential candidates who can change the perception of the Republican Party — to such a high-profile job. It would be a tremendous display of non-partisan leadership by the President, but unfortunately, I don’t see it happening. Some might point to the fact that Obama kept a Republican, George W. Bush-appointee, Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense, but Defense and State are two very different entities. State is a much more political Department than Defense is — and much more of a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
I hope I’m wrong, though. I’d love to see Governor Huntsman as Secretary of State. Anything to raise that profile and make him a contender is good in my book.
